Ferry Meadows walk and talk

A stroll around Ferry Meadows in Peterborough, with an introduction to Geocaching for anyone interested in learning about this hobby.

We will have a gentle stroll around the park taking in some views of the lakes, river and meadows.

An optional extension includes tree identification and roman ruins. Much of the way is paved or bridleway, but there are parts which are not suitable for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. A baby carrier is would be preferable to a stroller.

This is a circular walk in two loops and will take about 2 hours, there is the option to just do one of the loops for a shorter walk.

Geocaching

This is a akin to a treasure hunt game which uses a GPS device or GPS on a smartphone, to locate hidden containers. The walk leader will introduce you to the game and the walk will take you past a couple of hidden geocaches which you can try your luck at finding! If you want to download a free app ahead of the walk try Geocaching (R) or Cachly-Geocaching. There is a premium version of the game but you won't need it for this activity.

Why walk?

Walking is a great way to get active. For our good health it's recommended adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity like walking every week, in at least ten minute bursts. Keeping active is good for our hearts, lungs, muscles and bones. Walking helps keep us at a healthy weight and reduces risks for lots of long term health conditions.

Talking and walking go together. People who walk in groups often make new friends and enjoy improved social contact. Studies show people who live in areas with higher walking levels have more local friends and contacts. More people out walking also reduces crime and fear of crime through the 'eyes on the street' effect.

It's good for our mental health and wellbeing. Walking reduces stress, improves self-confidence and reduces risk of depression. It's a natural, safe exercise and a great way for people who are very unfit to get started slowly and build up.
