Enjoy a 9 mile walk around the World Heritage Site of Avebury. Follow the footsteps of the area's residents from over 4500 years ago. View the Neolithic structures and get to know other members, free of charge!
We plan to visit the following sites:
The Largest Stone Circle in the world! (much bigger than stone henge).
Windmill Hill - Farming site formed around 3675 BC. Three concentric rings of ditches circle the hilltop.
West Kennet Avenue - Follow the winding 1 1/2 mile ritual avenue of standing stones.
Long Barrow - Impressive neolithic chambered tomb, built around 3650 BC.
The Sanctuary - Neolithic temple from 2500 BC.
Silbury Hill - The largest artificial mound in Europe completed around 2400 BC.
Member Free! - bring your own water and lunch.
9.15am - Meet at the exit to Avebury National Trust carpark (SN8 1RD).
9.30am - Walk starts

Difficulty – This is 3/5 moderate difficulty covering around 9 miles. If you are unsure if this walk is suitable for you, get in touch.
Terrain - The walk is on generally good paths but there is some steep ground and stiles to cross. Good walking boots/shoes and clothing for the outdoors should be brought.
Lunch – Bring your own lunch and water, we will have a lunch stop on the walk if weather is ok.
Parking - There is a paid car park that is free to National Trust and English Heritage members, use postcode SN8 1RD.
Historic Sites - No cost to visit the sites on the walk but there is a paid museum there that is free to National Trust and English Heritage members and can be visited after the walk. To learn more about Avebury visit the English Heritage website.
