Main Open
Chris Mason-Thom bt David Robertson 3-1 A very competitive final saw Chris Mason-Thom the number 2 seed take on David Robertson. The first game was a very close affair with both players trading points as it stayed nip and tuck all the way to the end. Chris has been playing a high standard of team squash and it showed as he managed to close out the first game. Chris continued the second as he finished the first and as he was able to keep his opponent moving to all 4 corners of the court he stretched his lead to 2-0. At this point David changed tactics and this unsettled Chris as he struggled to come to terms with the slow tight squash from David. Some great drop shots and it was 2-1 – game on! It was not to be as the earlier work put into David’s legs began to take their toll and Chris was able to take a lead in the 4th that he never relinquished. A thoroughly entertaining final ending up 3-1 to Chris.
Veterans
George Lynch bt Dave Torrance 3-1 Dave took a strong lead in the first game opening up a 3-point gap at 7-4. Slowly George began to peg him back and a run of 3 points from 9-7 down saw George have the first game ball at 10-9. Dave saved this one but a couple of cunning drop shots from George and he took the first game. With momentum in his favour George carried this through the 2nd game to open up a 2-0 lead. Dave is a tough battler and (despite this being his second match of the night!) fought to take a close 3rd game. It seemed like his earlier efforts were beginning to take their toll and Dave couldn’t maintain the intensity as the 4th game went on. George taking it for a 3-1 victory.
Handicap
Jamie Turner bt Nathan Harrison 2-1 The handicap is always a great event with players handicapped in an attempt to make it an even contest. This final saw Jamie begin each game on -6 with Nathan on 0. In the first game Nathan managed to maintain his points advantage up to 13 (the games are played to 15) only for Jamie to level. At this stage it looked like Jamie had done enough to take the game but a couple of winners from Nathan and he was 1-0 up. Jamie started strong in the 2nd and narrowed the gap early. He pushed through his advantage to level up at 1-1. So we were into a decider… Jamie started well before a blood injury saw both players leave the court is was cleaned up (nothing too serious – a scrape on Jamie’s hand). At this point it looked like Jamie had the advantage in points but the crowd didn’t know what impact the injured hand would have on the outcome. The game ended up close but Jamie just managed to maintain his advantage to take the 3rd 15-12 and with it the match.
Main open plate
Max White bt Dave Torrance 3-0 This was Dave’s first final of the evening having battled to 2 finals – not a bad effort at all. Dave struggle to make much headway in the first game with Max a bit too clinical, especially at the front of the court. Max took a lead in the 2nd and despite a run of 5 points as Dave finally found his range he couldn’t prevent Max taking a 2-game lead. The 3rd was much closer with each player trading points. Eventually Max managed to open up a gap he kept until the end to take the match 3-0.
